Colorado Science Standards

Over the past few months we have been working to advocate for a more a robust climate education in the State Science Standards. Through multiple public comments, meetings, and with the help of various organizations, the Colorado State School Board voted to adopt new science standards for our state. Admittedly, they standards are not everything we had hoped for. They omit some references to fossil suels and greenhouse gases and do not mention climate change nearly as much as we would have liked. However, they do add a significant emphasis on the climate crisis, which is crucial for our education system. The board vited to adopt these standards 7-2, transcending partisan lines. Such bipartisan support would not have been possible without the broad support of Good Trouble, and each of you.

Climate Literacy Seal

In the spring of 2024, Good Trouble advocated for the passage of SB24-014, otherwise known as the Climate Literacy Bill. The bill is meant to encourage climate education– if Colorado students complete two environmentally related classes and one environmental service project, this legislation will allow them to earn a Seal of Climate Literacy. To support this bill, Good Trouble ran Instagram and letter-writing campaigns and testified before the legislature. State Senator Simpson told the Durango Herald that our letters informed his vote and State Representative Bradfield told her colleagues that student testimony convinced her to vote for SB24-014 in the House Education Committee. The bill was signed into law on May 23, 2024.
